Meet Emily

I decided to become a writer after completing a short story assignment in grade two. I fell in love with editing quite a bit later, while pursuing an English degree at the University of Ottawa.

I edited Ottawa Arts Review, uOttawa’s English language literary journal, and held several communications positions in both the public and private sectors while completing my degree. Then, post-graduation, I was hired as a writer for a food television website. I wrote and edited hundreds of blogs about food and nutrition before deciding to return to my bookish roots.

I’ve been providing editing and creative services to authors and publishers, and helping them live their best literary lives, ever since.

Education

I have a bachelor's degree in English (minor in Classics) from the University of Ottawa, where I took several creative writing courses and conducted an independent study course on female protagonists in Young Adult literature. I also have two publishing certificates. The first, from New York University's Summer Publishing Institute. The second, from X University, where I focused my studies on editing and was nominated for the Rosemary Shipton Award for Excellence in Book Editing. I regularly do professional development courses and webinars through Editors Canada, the Editorial Freelancers Association, and the Society for Editors and Proofreaders.

Interests

I’m a multipotentialite, which means I’ve got a lot of interests.

I’m a serial creative challenge participant. NaNoWriMo, Inktober, the 100 Day Challenge, the Goodreads Challenge, the 50 Book Pledge—I’ve done ’em, and I’ve survived.

I’ve written for Women Write About Comics and Arc Poetry Magazine, the latter of which I now edit reviews for. I’m currently working away on several writing projects, including a novel.

I experiment with all kinds of art (watercolour painting, ink illustration, printmaking—you name it!).

While many of my interests fall under arts and literature, I also enjoy travelling and exploring new places. Once, I even spent a month in Macedonia participating in an archaeological excavation.

Oh, and I also enjoy spending time with my wonderful little office assistant . . .
